The ATV, driven by the 17-year-old, lost control, causing it to plunge into the canal beside Lake Edinburg. This marked the first time she had operated a UTV. Leila Elizabeth Arias and Jaidy Alcala, who had graduated from Edinburg H.S. earlier in the year, were trapped inside the partially submerged vehicle.
The incident unfolded around 6:50 p.m. in the 6400 block of Rio Grande Care, near Lake Edinburg. Two other girls who were present during the accident managed to escape, seeking help from a nearby house. A 911 call was made, and the homeowner’s wife promptly drove them to a hospital. However, despite the efforts of the deputies who arrived at the scene, including performing CPR and rushing the victims to a medical facility, it was too late.
