Where Is Sal Magluta Now?
In the late ‘70s, two high school dropouts and childhood friends, Augusto ‘Willie’ Falcon and Salvator Magluta, embarked on a journey that would lead them to become the kingpins of one of the largest cocaine smuggling organizations on the East Coast.
The duo, prominently featured in the Netflix docuseries “Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami,” amassed a staggering $2 billion in cash by smuggling over 75 tons of cocaine into the United States from Colombia during the 1980s.
The Rise and Fall of Falcon and Magluta
With a well-connected network of suppliers, boat drivers, pilots, and bankers, Falcon and Magluta supplied major cities such as Miami, New York, and Washington, D.C., with copious amounts of cocaine. The Netflix docuseries delves into the intricate details of their drug empire, documenting the complex dance between the drug kingpins and law enforcement.
However, their empire eventually crumbled. In 1991, Falcon and Magluta were indicted on 17 drug trafficking charges, bringing an end to their years of eluding law enforcement. After a protracted trial, the duo surprisingly emerged unscathed in 1996.
Nevertheless, the shadows of suspicion lingered, with three witnesses set to testify against them murdered in the five years leading up to the trial. It later surfaced that the drug lords had resorted to bribing jurors to secure their acquittal.
The Legal Reckoning
In 1999, prosecutors reconstructed a case against Magluta and Falcon, accusing them of ordering the deaths of three witnesses, bribing jurors, and funding these actions with laundered money. This time, the legal system caught up with them.
“Sal Magluta did not plead guilty to any charges brought against him in 1999. He was tried again in 2002 and convicted of money laundering and bribery.”
Despite being acquitted of the murders related to their 1991 trial, Magluta faced a harsh sentencing. The judge imposed the maximum sentence of 205 years. An appeal provided a slight reprieve, reducing the sentence to 195 years. However, Magluta, who managed to evade major drug and murder charges, found himself staring at the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars.
Is Cocaine Cowboy of Griselda Still in Jail?
As of now, Sal Magluta is serving his sentence in a maximum-security federal prison in Marion, Illinois. Although his name has faded from the headlines, his story is far from over. According to the latest information, Magluta is set to be released in 2022, marking a significant chapter in the saga of the Cocaine Cowboys.
Is Sal Magluta Still Alive?
Notably, life outside prison has been tumultuous for Magluta. After his release in 1997, he and his wife Alexia Echevarria parted ways. Echevarria, later joining the cast of “The Real Housewives of Miami” from 2011 to 2013, carved her path while Magluta grappled with the repercussions of his criminal past.
